Avoiding physical proximity by bowing rather than shaking hands can be one of the reasons which slowed the the spread of Covid-19 in Japan.
In Japan, when people meet, they don’t generally hug or kiss but bow to each other. Bowing which is called o-jigi in Japanese is the feature of Japanese etiquette and a custom known even outside Japan. It is very important and the companies usually train their employees how to bow in a perfect manner. So, social distancing is somehow automatically observed when you are not shaking hands and bow when you meet each other.
