The highlight of Golden Week is May 5th which is the Children’s day. Japanese decorate their houses with “Koinobori” or carp streamers from April to early May, in honor of male children to have a good future and in the hope that they will grow up healthy and strong. You may also notice some carp fish streamers flying in the sky. This is a way Japanese household with boys celebrate the day.
In Japan, there are also special traditional foods for every festival or occasion, and Children’s Day is not an exception. Many mothers make carp streamer shaped dishes at home and celebrate children’s day. This is also a way of celebrating while observing social distancing!
