Kamakura is a very popular tourist destination near Tokyo. It was established about 1000 years ago in Kamakura period. The Samurai government was first established in the Kamakura period.
You can find lots of temples, shrines and historical monuments related to Samurai in Kamakura, as this is the birthplace of Shogunate in Japan.
Tsurugaoka Hachimangu is Kamakura’s most important Shinto shrine. It was founded in 1063 by Yoriyoshi Minamoto and it it is dedicated to the Minamoto family and Hachiman which is the god of samurai and war.
Many events such as Hatsumode, the first visit of the year to a shrine, and horseback archery that is called Yabusame in Japanese are held at the shrine every year.
