Japanese New Year

One of the  New Year’s symbolic ornaments is Kagamimochi.

It is made with two round rice cakes which is called mochi in Japanese. The bigger mochi is placed on a stand and a smaller mochi sits on top of it. A Japanese bitter orange called “daidai” stands above all.

Mochi is made of rice and rice is a food for special days. It is said that this lucky item brings good fortune, hope and prosperity in the coming year.
